To celebrate the Coosa River and Wetumpka’s Big Fish history, the Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Big Catfish Cook off on Nov. 2 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Merchant’s Alley.

“The goals of this fun, unique event are to build more interest in the community, promote our local businesses, provide a great family event, promote Merchant’s Alley and build interest in our downtown river walk,” said Shellie Whitfield, Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce director.

Cook teams are encouraged to sign up and compete for the tastiest catfish creations. There is a $200 fee to enter as a cook team, which includes the catfish, tables, sample cups, propane and other cooking supplies.

“Teams are encouraged to prepare the catfish in any way they choose,” said Whitfield. “Guests will enjoy catfish cold-cooked, grilled, sautéed – lots of creative and varied presentations.”

General admission for guests will be $25 for adults; $12 for children ages 7 to 12; and free for kids ages 6 and under. Tickets include a big plate of catfish, hushpuppies, baked beans and slaw. Attendees also will sample team creations and vote for the crowd favorite. Alcohol is welcomed, but will not be provided.

Aside from the food, there will be live music on site and artwork for sale by local artists.

Sponsorships are available at varying levels.

The deadline for team registration is Oct. 15. Registration forms and tickets can be found on the Wetumpka Area Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.
